What Happens during a Consultation? The first herbal consultation takes one hour, during which time you will be asked a variety of questions about your health. This enables the herbalist to build a holistic picture of your being and decide on an appropriate treatment strategy. This generally includes a mixture of different herbs tailored to the individual, alongside advice on diet and lifestyle. This enables the herbalist to monitor progress, make any necessary adjustments to the medicine and give continued support and advice regarding diet and lifestyle. Repeat visits usually last for just over half an hour and take place every 2-4 weeks. During an aromatherapy of therapeutic massage there is a short consultation followed by a massage tailored to the individuals needs, alongside advice on diet, lifestyle etc. Medical Herbalism, Aromatherapy and Therapeutic massage Herbal medicine is the use of plant remedies to treat disease. It is one of the oldest known forms of medicine and is still widely practiced, with 80% of the world’s population still reliant on herbal medicine for their health. Members of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (MNIMH) are trained with the same diagnostic skills as orthodox doctors, but take a more holistic approach to illness, looking for the underlying cause of the problem. Herbal medicine can be used to treat a wide range of different conditions, both acute and chronic, for example hormonal problems like an under or over active thyroid, PMT and menopausal symptoms, IBS, ulcers and other digestive complaints, skin complaints like eczema and psoriasis, circulatory problems like varicose veins, angina and palpitations, urinary problems, headaches, allergies and arthritis. A medical herbalist will also advise if a condition is best treated by (or in combination with) orthodox medicine. Jean Senior is a MNIMH and offers a free 10 minute chat to those interested in Herbal Medicine but not sure if it is the right treatment for them. Aromatherapy uses essential oils extracted from plants and flowers to treat everyday ailments such as headaches, tiredness and stress.
